Annual retreats are an integral and important part of the SyMoCADS qualification program. They help us to achieve our main goal: to equip the participating doctoral and postdoctoral researches with the knowledge and skill set needed to significantly advance the emerging interdisciplinary field of Molecular Communication. The RTG retreats, held at suitable, secluded venue outside the FAU, not only offer SyMoCADS members the opportunity to evaluate the scientific progress of the RTG but also promote team building.
This year, SyMoCADS’ members and associates returned for the third time for a retreat to the Forschungscampus Waischenfeld. The first day began with two outstanding and inspiring talks given by our distinguished guests – Prof. Sasitharan Balasubramaniam (“Biological AI: Programming Living Systems for Computing”, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA) and Prof. Urbashi Mitra (“Biological Constraint Inspired Causal Graph Identification”, University of Southern California, USA) as well as poster sessions of doctoral researches of Cluster 1 and 2. The afternoon was dedicated to a workshop led by Benjamin Volk on “Conflict Competence in Academia” and the evening provided an opportunity to for discussion, networking, sport activities and a BBQ.
The morning of the second day started with PA and young researcher meetings, as well as a poster presentation of Cluster 3, followed by two more very interesting lectures: The first given by another guest speakers, DI Dr. Stefan Angerbauer from Johannes Keppler University, Linz, Austria (“Personalized Fertility Research: Computational and Experimental Approaches”) and Dr. Sebastian Schuol (“Ethical Aspects of Molecular Communication and Internet of Bio-Nano-Things: Specific Scenarios “), who is SyMoCADS’ associate working on ethical aspects of molecular communication within ERMES project. Many thanks to all our speakers for their excellent presentations!
Our team building activity – a canoe trip on the Wiesent river – was somewhat quite challenging, but we really enjoyed the team spirit and the beautiful scenery of the surrounding nature. And even though some of us got pretty wet, we managed to reach our destination line with everyone on board and no capsize incidents. 😉
